OMG is it October 11th yet?  Because that’s when Ryan Adams’ new CD, Ashes & Fire, will be dropping.  I am trying as hard as I possibly can not to listen to all the tracks that are available on the internet, but the first officially released song, Lucky Now, sounds amazing.  No computer touched this album at all, and I have to say that I am glad.  His voice sounds better than it’s sounded in a long time.  Probably a good lesson for a lot of those so-called singers out there who use Protools to make them sound halfway decent.  Ryan Adams is the real deal, y’all.

Love this song, love the video.

My current feel good song of the summer.  I will say that I thought the singer was a girl until I got to the second song on this album, but no matter.

best imitation of myself

The other day I had the privilege of seeing Mr. Ben Folds perform.  I’ve seen him a number of times before, but he still always manages to astound me.  It astounds me that he can get up on that stage with just a piano and perform an amazing show.  Anyway, if you’re not familiar with his music, I highly recommend getting his most recent album, Lonely Avenue, which is a collaboration with Nick Hornby.  Nick wrote all the words, and Ben wrote and performed the music.  The best song, surprisingly enough, is a song called “Levi Johnston’s Blues.”  And yeah, it’s about pretty much what you think it’s about.

This is pretty sweet as well.

Stuff like this is why I went to art school.  Too bad I realized that you’re destined to be poor unless you can create stuff like this, or are willing to work for a big corporation where you don’t really get to be creative at all.  The number of people I know who are completely disillusioned by art school keeps getting bigger.  Why don’t people ever tell us these things?

I love when I purchase an album, listen to it, and completely forget about it, only to discover its brilliance years later.  One such album is 9 by Damien Rice.  It’s pretty much the perfect breakup album, and I usually bring it out when I’m sad.  Or when I need to listen to something and nothing else quite fits my mood.  His voice sounds so beautifully anguished on “Elephant,” and so gleefully angry on “Rootless Tree.”  And “The Animals Were Gone” is one of the best songs about missing someone that one could ever hope to hear.

At night I trip without you

In hopes I won’t wake up

Cause waking up without you

Is like drinking from an empty cup

not with a bang but a whimper

Oh look, the world didn’t end.  How ‘bout that.  Supposedly it ends at 9 pm EST, so if it does, it will end with me listening to Ryan Adams.  Gold, natch.

I still haven’t figured out what I want this tumblr to be, so I’ll just talk about another CD that came out this year that I absolutely love. I’ve been hearing about Lykke Li everywhere since her second album, Wounded Rhymes, came out a couple of months ago.  I finally downloaded it from eMusic, and this is one of those cases where I would have to say that the hype is dead-on.  Check it out if you haven’t already, especially the song “Sadness Is a Blessing.”

Keeping up with the theme of music that has been rocking my world lately, the new album by The Kills, Blood Pressures, is probably going to end up being one of my favorite albums this year.  I have always loved Allison Mosshart’s voice, but I think it sounds particularly amazing on this CD, especially on the song DNA.

Check out Satellite, the first single from Blood Pressures.
